About this violin
The Gliga Maestro Lion's Head is a 4/4 violin handmade in Romania, built on the Stradivari pattern and finished by hand. It is a one-of-a-kind instrument, made for advanced players and for collectors who want an instrument that is unusual to look at as well as to hear.
What makes this violin distinctive
- Hand-carved lion's head scroll. A carved lion's head replaces the traditional scroll.
- Double purfling. Intricate double inlaid purfling frames both the top plate and the back, accentuating the contours.
- Highly flamed tonewoods. A tight, straight-grained spruce top and a two-piece back of deeply flamed maple with a pronounced tiger-stripe pattern.
- Rich warm varnish. Finished in a warm, golden-amber oil varnish that brings out the depth of the grain and the flame.
- Premium setup. Set up with Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Gold strings, for a brilliant, powerful tone with warmth and projection.
Why a lion's head?
Carving a lion's head in place of the scroll is a Baroque practice, most closely associated with Jacob Stainer, the Tyrolean maker whose violins were valued above Cremonese instruments for much of the 17th and 18th centuries. Several of his violins made after 1665 carry beautifully stylised lion heads instead of the conventional scroll.
The carving serves no acoustic purpose. It is the maker showing what his hands can do, on the one part of a violin where decoration costs the sound nothing.
The woods used in this violin
Solid Carpathian Resonance Spruce (Picea Abies (L) Karst) — the top plate, the bass bar, the blocks, the corner-blocks, the linings and the sound post.
Solid Carpathian Flamed Mountain Maple (Acer Pseudoplatanus L.) — the back plate, the neck, the scroll, the peg box, the ribs and the bridge.
Ebony (Diospyros sp.) — the fingerboard, pegs, top nut, purfling, chin rest, tailpiece, saddle and end pin.

Orders are processed immediately and usually ship within 24 hours. Orders placed on Friday, Saturday or Sunday are normally shipped the following Monday. If anything delays your order, we'll email you.
All our instruments come with a 7-day trial period, beginning on the day of delivery. You may return all items purchased within 7 days of delivery. A refund will be processed promptly, as soon as the items reach our office in Vancouver. The items must be in the same condition as when received.
