1/2 size violins for sale in Canada
A half size violin is the instrument most children play between roughly seven and nine, after they outgrow a 1/4 and before they move up to a 3/4. We carry handmade Gliga violins in 1/2 at every level, from $278, all made in Romania from Carpathian spruce and flamed maple and set up by hand in our West Vancouver shop before they ship.
How big is a 1/2 size violin?
A Gliga half size violin measures about 20½ inches (52 cm) overall, with a body of roughly 12¾ inches. For comparison, a 1/4 size violin is around 18 to 19 inches overall, and a 3/4 size violin about 21 to 22 inches.
Is your child ready for a 1/2?
Children usually move up to a half size around seven to nine years old — but age is the least reliable guide, because children of the same age vary enormously. Arm length is what decides it. Have them hold the left arm straight out to the side and measure from the base of the neck to the middle of the palm. Roughly 20 to 22 inches means a 1/2.
Resist the temptation to buy a size up so it lasts longer. A violin that is too big makes the left hand stretch and the shoulder tense, and a child who is fighting the instrument makes slower progress than one on a violin that fits. If you are between sizes, or unsure, send us the measurement, or ask their teacher — they see the child play every week and will know.
Choosing a level
Most children on a half size are still fairly new to the instrument, so the beginner and intermediate levels cover almost everyone. The higher grades are here for the gifted young player:
- Genial 1 — the beginner violin, and the right choice for a first year or two of lessons
- Gems 1 — intermediate; warmer and more responsive, for a child who is clearly staying with it
- Gama — advanced, for a young player working seriously on tone
- Maestro — hand-carved throughout
A half size is usually outgrown within two or three years, which is worth weighing against how much to spend. A good one holds its value and is easy to pass on to the next child.
Bows and cases
Come and try them
Our shop is in West Vancouver, by Park Royal, with easy access from the Lions Gate Bridge and Highway 1. Bring your child in and we will measure them properly and let them play several instruments side by side.
Ordering from elsewhere in Canada
Violins ship anywhere in Canada from $65, arrive in seven to ten business days, and every parcel is tracked. Tell us your child's arm measurement and how long they have been playing and we will recommend one.
There is then a seven-day home trial from the day it arrives, which is long enough to take it to a lesson and let the teacher see it under your child's chin. If the size or the instrument is not right, send it back for a refund less the shipping.
