1/4 size violins for sale in Canada
A quarter size violin is the instrument most children play between roughly five and seven, after a 1/8 and before they move up to a 1/2. We carry handmade Gliga violins in 1/4 at four levels, from $258, all made in Romania from Carpathian spruce and flamed maple and set up by hand in our West Vancouver shop before they ship.
How big is a 1/4 size violin?
A 1/4 Gliga violin is 48 cm, or 19 inches, in total length — that measurement includes the neck and the scroll. The body alone, without the neck and scroll, is 28.5 cm, or 11¼ inches.
For comparison, a 1/8 size violin is smaller again, and a 1/2 size violin is about 20½ inches overall.
Is your child ready for a 1/4?
Children usually move to a quarter size somewhere between five and seven years old, but age is the least reliable guide — children of the same age differ enormously. Arm length is what decides it. Have them hold the left arm straight out to the side and measure from the base of the neck to the middle of the palm. Roughly 18 to 20 inches, or 46 to 51 cm, means a 1/4.
Resist buying a size up so it lasts longer. A violin that is too big makes a small hand stretch and a small shoulder tense, and a child fighting the instrument progresses more slowly than one on a violin that fits. If you are unsure, send us the measurement, or ask their teacher — they see the child play every week and will know.
Choosing a level
Our 1/4 size violins come in four levels, each a real step up in wood and workmanship rather than a change of supplier:
- Genial 1 — designed for the absolute beginner, and the right instrument for a first year of lessons
- Gems 2 — a higher level, made of better and more beautiful wood
- Gems 1 — for a child who wants a more mature tone and a faster response; better wood and workmanship
- Gama — the finest we make in this size. Rich tone, easy to play, a gorgeous wood pattern
Most families start at Genial 1 or Gems 2. A quarter size is usually outgrown within two or three years, which is worth weighing against how much to spend — though a good one holds its value and is easy to pass on to a younger child.

Violins ship anywhere in Canada from $65, arrive in seven to ten business days, and every parcel is tracked. Tell us your child's arm measurement and how long they have been playing and we will recommend one.
There is then a seven-day home trial from the day it arrives, long enough to take it to a lesson and let the teacher see it under your child's chin. If the size or the instrument is not right, send it back for a refund less the shipping.
