Who this violin is for
Gems 1 is Gliga's intermediate level, between the Genial beginner violins and the Gama advanced violins. This one is a good fit for:
- students moving up from a 3/4 violin to full size
- intermediate and advanced adult students upgrading their current violin
- young players who want to start on a better instrument
- adult beginners who would rather buy once than upgrade in a year
What makes this limited edition different
Four things set this limited edition apart from the standard Gems 1 Elite violins (from $798): a superior grade of flamed maple for the back, ribs, neck and scroll; an antique finish; pegs, chinrest, tailpiece and end button hand-carved from flamed maple; and a higher level of workmanship throughout.
How it sounds
This violin has a warm, mellow and inviting sound.
It is strung with Thomastik Dominant strings, which suit that character: their synthetic core gives a warm, rounded tone close to gut strings, and they stay in tune well through Vancouver's changes in humidity. The four Wittner fine tuners in the tailpiece make tuning easier for students.
Woods used in this violin
- Carpathian resonance spruce (Picea abies) – top plate, bass bar, blocks, linings and sound post
- Carpathian flamed maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) – back, ribs, neck, scroll, pegbox and bridge, and the hand-carved pegs, chinrest, tailpiece and end button
- Ebony (Diospyros sp.) – fingerboard, top nut, purfling and saddle
